The forecast was for 90% chance of rain in a season that has had hardly anything but rain. I called Carla the day before the wedding to talk about the gloomy report and location alternates should we have to face a storm. “Not worried about it,” she laughed. “That’s what umbrellas are for!” I knew in that moment that Carla was my favorite kind of client: down-to-earth, carefree, happy, positive.
When I packed my bags in the car for the early morning drive to Girdwood I had all the fixings to brave the day: clear umbrellas, raincoat, waterproofing for my gear. But Alaska felt like showing off, and she did. I felt like the whole day was bursting with joy for these two. The trees waved and clapped their long arms in the air, the sun danced and glistened over the waves, Beluga whales even showed up to witness the spectacle of love.
We started our day on an empty beach for a first look. Carla and Cayle wanted that special moment where they first saw each other to be quiet and intimate one, away from the crowd of onlookers, just the two of them, the ocean at their feet, the mountains at their back, and their story through my lens.
The wedding and reception took place at the Forget-Me-Not Nursery. Somehow in the last 12 years of wedding photography we have never had the opportunity to photography at that unique venue, so we were pretty excited and it did not disappointed. Quaint, charming, rustic, romantic, floral. It was all the things. Not to mention, the other vendors this couple hired were just AMAZING. The cake, florals, food, music…we couldn’t get enough.
Photographing these two was so much fun. Cayle is quiet and solid and sweet. He’s an anchor, dependable, kind. Carla is free-spirited, bold, joyous, brave. They have loved each other since childhood. Yep, they are that couple. The rare tale of lasting young love that tugs on all our heartstrings. How could it not? Some stories are just so dang beautiful. What an honor it is to be the storyteller.
